Welcome to our second series of myofascial release exercises. Here are a few things to know before you start:

Stretches: Fascia stretches should last from 90 seconds to 5 minutes to be most effective. Start with each stretch for 90 seconds-2 minutes. Pause when feeling resistance until it dissipates. (!) The slightest stretch and the longer you stay, the more efficient it will be. Stronger stretches can damage the tissue; aim for slight discomfort, around 3-4 on a scale of 1-10 (!).

Ball Exercises: Use an inflated myofascial ball, tennis ball, or similar. Apply static pressure for a minimum of 90 seconds to allow fascia to release.

Exercise 1: Lie on the floor with your knees bent, and bring one leg up at a time. Place your hands on your knees and start to rock gently, moving your knees towards your head and away.

Exercise 2: Lie down on your front on the floor or bed, positioning a ball within your hip bone area. To ensure comfort, support yourself with your elbows or a pillow. Alternatively, you can stand against a corner of a wall.

Exercise 3: Place the ball on the side of your hip and lean against a wall. Repeat on the other side.

Happy to share some cool findings from a recent experiment with @emildimov777 and @naturally__holistic . We wanted to see how Swedish massage could help balance muscles after an intense workout on the chest, shoulders, and triceps. 🏋️‍♂️

Before the massage, Emil had some unevenness in his muscles. But after the massage? Big improvements in balance all around!

📈 The Numbers:

Sole of the Foot: Went from 86% to 98%
Pecs: Improved from 13% to 86%
Deltoids: Jumped from 43% to 95%
Achilles Tendon: Rose from 16% to 97%
Lower Back: Got better, from 82% to 99%
Shoulder Blades: Increased from 5% to 69%
Rear Traps: Moved from 5% to 62%
Back of the Neck: Went up from 67% to 88%

This isn’t just about focusing on a few muscles. It’s about seeing how a good workout and a Swedish massage together can help your whole body feel more balanced. 🔄💪

A week ago, I went running and made the mistake of skipping my stretching routine. The result? I felt discomfort in both of my quads, with the left one causing particular difficulty in movement. During my yoga session yesterday, the difference was clear. The left quad’s range of motion was noticeably worse compared to the right, and the discomfort was more intense.

Typically, my assessments center on muscle stiffness. However, this time, I shifted my focus to ‘elastic recoil’, a crucial factor in athletic performance and injury prevention. Post-yoga, the health of my left vastus medialis bounced back to 100%, while the right reached 72%. Before I started tracking, my back pain was a mystery. I loved backbends, but I soon realized from my assessments that the way I was doing them was causing more harm than good. The Vastus Medialis, commonly linked to inner thigh and knee pain, can result in knee fragility. Such discomfort might even disrupt your sleep. Intriguingly, symptoms from Vastus Medialis stiffness are frequently mistaken for arthritis, ligament injuries, or tendinitis. By maintaining the Vastus Medialis in a optimal condition, you can avoid issues arising from stiffness.

Here are the results:
I decided to explore what will the impact of yoga and running. I measured the symmetry between the left and right sides of the vmo before and after six sessions.

• Day 1: Pre-run: 59% | Post-run: 100%
• Day 3: Pre-run: 71% | Post-run: 100%

Yet, when these muscles are not in optimal condition, it's easy to overstrain them during various activities, be it hobbies or daily tasks. These muscles play a crucial role in supporting anything you hold with your hands, whether it's a toddler, a heavy grocery bag, or a tool. At times, they even bear the weight of our entire body, such as when we push ourselves up from the floor.

One common issue is the asymmetry in muscle strength and flexibility. Often, we favour one side over the other in our daily activities, leading to one side becoming weaker and the other stiffer. This imbalance can indeed lead to various issues such as pain, stiffness, and potential injuries.

Curious about the potential benefits of qigong in addressing this imbalance, I decided to conduct a little experiment. I wanted to see if just 10 minutes of qigong could enhance the balance and symmetry in my triceps. Before starting qigong, I noticed my right side felt stiffer, and upon assessment, it indeed was stiffer than the left. The symmetry between the two sides was at 32%. However, post the qigong session, I was amazed to find that the symmetry had improved to an impressive 100%.

I recently checked the balance between my right and left forearms before diving into a slow-flow vinyasa yoga session. The results? My left side, which I use more, was notably stiffer. As highlighted in a previous post, lower back pain often starts from referred pain from a different region. This time, I focused on measuring the symmetry between both sides of my lower back. Before my Ashtanga yoga session, the symmetry was at 51%, and I didn't feel my best. In fact, my right side felt noticeably stiffer. However, right after yoga, not only did the symmetry improve to 78%, but I also felt a notable relief in my back. By the next day, the sensation of freedom and release was even more pronounced, further confirmed by the assessment showing a remarkable 94% symmetry.

Met @connorbradleycn today, a dedicated jiu-jitsu athlete keen on refining his performance. 🥋 We not only discussed the effects of a 5km run on his physique but also assessed his body symmetry between the two sides. 📊
After running, we observed significant improvements:
• Sole of the foot symmetry: 61% ➡ 94%
• Middle back: 63% ➡ 97%
• Achilles tendon: 10% ➡ 95%
• Quad: 8% ➡ 91%
• Shin: 83% ➡ 97%
• Back of the forearm: 86% ➡ 94%
However, post-run, Conor felt discomfort in his right knee. Interestingly, we pinpointed a drop in his right hamstring symmetry from 100% to 79%, which could explain the pain. It’s known that hamstrings can influence knee discomfort, so the findings aligned.
For a 10-minute Qigong session 🧘‍♂, we had the guidance of @emildimov777 , another dedicated martial art athlete and teacher. Under his instruction, not only did Conor feel better, but we also noted improvements:
• Deltoid symmetry: 35% ➡ 42%
• Hamstrings: 79% ➡ 86%
• Traps: 19% ➡ 97%
• Rear traps: 16% ➡ 59%
• Tricep: 10% ➡ 58%
The Qigong session even aided in rectifying the hamstring symmetry, bringing it up to 86%.

Personally, I have noticed that most of my headaches originate from the back of my neck and have found relief through practicing yoga. Curious about how Vinyasa yoga could specifically impact the back of my neck, I decided to assess the symmetry of both sides before and after a class. Prior to the session, the symmetry of the back of my neck was at 12%, but after the class, it had increased to 82%, which is a significant improvement.
